Vietnam: first visit to Dalat

A short flight this morning took us to Dalat, a hill city developed by the French in the early twentieth century.

After lunch (a bun cha ca) we walked down to the markets and then down to the lake to get our bearings before heading a little out of town to visit the old palace of the last Emperor of Vietnam, Bao Dai. He was ousted in 1955 and spent the rest of his life in exile in France.  I was very taken with the interior design of the house, particularly the staircase details.

We enjoyed some freshly made pots of yoghurt while we waited for a cab back to town. It was a relatively easy day, rounded off by a meal at the V Cafe with a little live music.
